QUAIL HUNTING

Calibers

  • 12 Gauge: It is the most commonly used caliber. It provides both the opportunity to find a wide range of cartridges and is suitable for various types of hunting.
  • 20 Gauge: Lighter and more portable, ideal for quail hunting. Provides less recoil than 12 caliber.
  • 28 Gauge and .410 Bore: Although less common, they can be suitable especially for young or beginner hunters. They are lighter and offer less recoil.

Hunting Season

Quail hunting is usually done in the fall and winter months. The hunting season in Türkiye usually starts in September and continues until January. However, it is important to look at the hunting dates and regulations from the official hunting calendars, which are updated every year.

Hunting Regions

  • Türkiye: Thrace region, Aegean and Mediterranean regions, some parts of Central Anatolia are popular places for quail hunting.
  • North America: Southeastern USA is preferred for Bobwhite quail, and the west coast is preferred for California quail.
  • Europe: Countries around the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe are suitable for quail hunting.

Hunting Methods

  • Hunting with Dogs: Hunting dogs play a big role in determining the location of quails and helping the hunter. Pointer and setter types are ideal for this job.
  • Trotting Method: Hunters try to fly quails by walking in fields or open areas and shoot the flying birds.
  • Waiting Method: It is hunted by lying in wait in areas where quails are often found.

Hunting Equipment

  • Rifles and Cartridges: Light rifles and cartridges of appropriate caliber are used.
  • Hunting Dogs: Hunting dogs such as pointer or setter are ideal for locating quails.
  • Camouflage: Suitable camouflage clothing is worn so that the hunter blends in with the environment and does not scare the quails.

Hunting Tips

  1. Early Hours: Quails are more active in the early morning hours and the chance of hunting increases.
  2. Silence: Be quiet and careful, because quails are very timid.
  3. Trained Dogs: A well-trained hunting dog increases the efficiency of the hunt.
  4. Observe the Environment: Observe the environment well to determine the areas where quails are often found.
